teak trolly

Hi all
I have recently aquired six teak planks six inches X 3 inches X five feet , I am thinking of making a trolly or two out of them . Does anyone know if there are any problems with working with teak ( like oak attacks steel ) .

Teak is wonderful to work with - usually free of knots and fine grained. To finish sand down to about 320 grit then apply Danish oil several times, rubbing down in between, If you want it really weather proof use Yacht Varnish as top coat - cheapest from Screwfix.

It does look like very nice grain I will take your advice on the finishing should make a lovely trolley all mortise and tenon but I think it will weigh about half the weight of the engine.

Yes Kev as Paul says teak is a lovely timber and with Danish oil on it comes up a treat . Hope we can see it when finished please

Hi Kev, I have just seen the price of second grade teak. About £130 per cu ft.
Your 5 boards total 3.75 cu ft. OR, £487.50.
A boat builder would probably give that for them especially if it is the old dark oily type that doesn't seem to be imported any more. Chris.

Thanks for the info Chris.i might have to seriously think about putting them up for sale at that sort of money they could buy me a nice little engine. They came from an old school and they were over 3 metres long , I cut them in half for storage . The thing is a neighbour gets them for me now and again and I have had teak ,Brazilian mahogany, oak , elm, ash,iroko,and walnut somtimes in sizes up to 8 inch X 4 inch and I must confess I have a wood stove and most have ended up in there, I have never thought they might have any real value. I may have to rethink my firewood supplies

OH no. I too have a wood burner as my main heating but keep all teak off cuts on neat shelves.
I got some 2" x 4" old teak decking out of a skip recently with fastening holes in it every 2 ft.or so. Lovely oily stuff, all of which I kept of course. Recently I made a very nice stern platform for the boat out of it saving me serious money..No other wood comes near it.
Sorry if I sound like a clever dick and hope the engine carriage gets made.
