Hi as above got this the other day. a bit of research tells me it's a lister 18 DH.   HP 1.5.   RPM 700.  1937.  if the tag can be trusted hopefully someone can tell.

it appears to me that the pump is the wrong way round,(should be behind the engine so the water pipes point away from the engine)
and the drive belt is 3 1/4" X 1/4" far to big for the water pumps 1 1/4" pulley. all this can be dealt with later. also think i need a smaller pulley for next to the fly wheel on the engine

my main issue is it wont run ( i know it did, i bought it from a mate and have seen it running many times in the past but it hasn't been run for a couple years now) there's no spark, i have ordered a plug champion D23,
i have also looked at point set and mine is different to everything iv'e seen so far, if someone could tell me what the mag is and are the points the right ones, bottom of the mag and shims look orible so i guess that'll be coming of for a good sand down to make a decent earth for the mag

also gonna dismantle, clean and rebuild the carb first so i'm not dealing with 2 different issues at the same time

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable about Lister Ds will be along shortly, but I would start by making sure you have a good earth between the mag and bracket.

It may be worth investing in a copy of "The Lister D story" https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253804451515

There is a good Facebook group that will probably be able to help.

Time to get the multimeter out and check coil resistance and earths as previously suggested.

thanks for your replies,
gonna order the recommended manual, probably a sound investment,
the continuity between mag and mount was hit and miss (no pun intended) took the mag off and shims were a bit nasty, (surface rust) so cleaned em off with a bit of emery paper and still no spark, the brush at the mag end of ht lead looks good as does the copper ring the brush connects with,
there's no makers name on the mag, i presume lister never made their own,
one side says
ML LISTER
the other
MK 1-4          437
DB5   452961   38490
if someone could tell me the make and model of the mag or point me in the right direction, it would be most appreciated,
after that i'm stumped as to how to take the mag apart (it's different to any i'v seen on video) is it the 3 nut's on the points side, one of which is the points cap spring clip?
once i have it in bits i can the test the coils resistance as suggested above

thanks steve

EDIT
had a look at lucas mags and mine doesn't look like the S series i'v heard mentioned before, the one that looks the sameas mine is the lucas KL1
if anyone can confirm this
once again thanks

Info on ML Magnetos here

1 - 4 is the model number

The magneto is the correct one for a spec 18 Lister 'D'

PS.
Don't drive that pump from the flywheel it'll thrash it to death.

thanks very much garak, interesting article loads of info, now i should be able to refine my search to that particular model and make
as above i kinda figured i'll need a smaller pulley to drive the pump and probably a smaller belt.

just a quick update, it was, as i thought the magneto, sent it off to those fine people in Bristol who refurbished it and the old beast fired up strait away, Thanks to Vintage Magnetos good job and quick turnaround:D
thanks to Garak for pointing me in the right direction it was indeed an ML mk1 and apparently original to the year of my engine, bonus
robotstar5 thanks for linc to the lister book ive ordered one of those

before i got the mag back i stripped the carb down cleaned  and reassembled it, it's amazing just how simple and effective they are, not like the multi bank CV's on me bikes,
got some vintage motor oil, a gallon of the stuff, so i can fill it run it then repeat with a good clean before and after the first oil change.
Had a couple small pinholes in the bottom of the tank which reared their ugly heads once i stopped the engine and turned petcock off, i guess when the tap is on and the engine is running the petrol takes the path of least resistance

still gotta get a smaller pulley for the engine, idiots on evilbay want more than you can buy them new (£20 from stationary engine parts) unless i can find one at a jumble
any advice on belt for pump would be appreciated, width mainly the pully is 1 1/4"
also maintenance for my 4" wide leather belt it's a bit dry can you treat or oil em ?

as for my initial post, what can i say except that was the day my brain stayed asleep, glad nobody replied turn the pump round you plonker Embarassed

Nice to hear that you have it running again. Maybe saddle soap for the belt?
