Good evening all.

Today I bought a Norman SC without a magneto. Can anyone tell me if a suitable magneto exists and where to purchase one, please? Pictures to follow - once the mud has been cleaned off of the thing!

Thanks in anticipation,

Tiffy

Hello and welcome! welcome sign

You could try a wanted ad on here and/or Stationary Engine magazine. Do you know what make and model of mag you need?

I think you need a BTH MC1 or a WICO Series A but I'm sure blue cat will be able tell you precisely what is required. The single cylinder types come up regularly on fleabay - often complete with spark!

Hi Tiffy, if you let me know the engine number I'll tell you the correct magneto. Engine number is just to the side of the mag platform, look for somehitng like SC1234 stamped into a raised block.

Sorry, but this will not fit a Norman SC engine, or any other Norman engine.

Hi Tiffy,
Norman type SC number SC6780 was one of 40 SC engines sold to Auto Diesels, Uxbridge, on 5th August 1948. These engines were supplied without silencers. Auto Diesels assembled these into generator and compressor sets for further sale.

This particular engine had a BTH magneto type MC1 AP4 fitted (MC1 AH4 and MC1 AG4 will also fit). However, these are quite hard to find as they also fit many motorcycles of the period, and your magneto may well have been robbed off the engine to fit on a motorcycle. Expect to pay about £80 for a non-sparking one and at least double that for a good one.

As noted by Paul, Norman SC engines were also fitted with Wico Series A magnetos after 1945, so although not original, you may be able to find one of these a little cheaper. The exact Wico Series A model is A990BZ, this is a non-impulse type magneto.

Was this one on eBay, for about 1 day ?

Hi blue cat,

I cannot begin to guess how you did all of that, but I am so grateful that you can and that you did! Not sure how I will repay you, but I will think long and hard.....

It was listed on ebay, but it was on for about a week, I think. The chap I bought it from does a lot of lawn mower things, if that narrows it down.

Again, I am in your debt. Stay safe.

Best wishes and regards,

Tiffy

So given that you are now the most important man in my life, may I ask if any of those spares are available, please? I would like to be able to change the air filter, head gasket and the rubber(?) "boots" at the base of the push rods. Finally, could you please tell me if any sort of manual is available?

Air filters were made by Vokes and were bespoke to Norman's they are alsomade of unobtainium Laughing
The rubber boots I don't have (but you can be inventive and find something suitable for them).

I have a head gasket and a manual. Please send PM for details.
