Swan charging set

As the weather wasn't so good on Sunday I dragged this out and had a play. No spark at first, so off came the cowling and I cleaned the points up, got a weak spark so took the flywheel off for better access for a more thorough clean of the points and it now has healthy spark.

Encouraged, I proceeded to clean off the farm detritus.



Then a wipe over with some white spirit left it looking 100% better.





One question, does anyone know what type of fuse I need (15A) and where I can get one?





The next job is to clean out the fuel tank and carb.

Thanks, I will look at ordering a couple. I should have studied it a bit more closely, but I had it in my head it would be a 'military only' part made of unobtainium...

I think yours pre dates the ones I found but you might find one exactly like it in a radio spares/ junk shop

Nice little sets, I had a Swan generator with a JAP 2 stroke engine attached back in the early 90s. Only have a photo of a corner of it when I was about 6, so sadly can't remember the fuse it had. Saying that it was probably just fuse wire?

Thanks Steve, yes I've seen the ROC site. I can't quite get my head around having to drag the charging set above ground to charge the batteries...

I've had a closer look at the fuse holder, one end is marked 'Spare Wire' so as you say looks like it's rewireable, but I think I still must be missing the carrier for the wire?

^ They are just the holders again, and a bit rich for my taste...

I will keep looking, if all else fails I'm sure it won't be hard to mackle something up to hold a piece of fuse wire.

I was thinking more about 'after the event'

Had another play yesterday, didn't have as much time on it as I hoped as I found that after heavy rain overnight the centre console in my van was doing a good impression of a goldfish bowl so had to reseal the roof aerial...

I did manage to strip the carb and clean it out, I also cleaned out the fuel tank and freed off the fuel taps (there is a drain tap as well as the on/off tap). I found there was no gauze filter in the carb banjo, luckily I had one in my spares stash.

Nice little unit - nearly there!

Had a blitz on this this afternoon as I wanted to try to get it done for Open Farm Sunday tomorrow. After a bit of trial and error I got the recoil starter back together, it had been 'got at' in the past with a hacked off bolt holding the spindle in. With it back in place I put some fuel in and much to my surprise it fired up after a few pulls and ran smoothly. So with some thick walled plastic tube from my model making bits 'n bobs box and a couple of screws I made a fuse wire holder:


I had to take the starter off again a couple of times as the spindle came loose, I have fitted a new bolt which seems to have done the trick. So out came the multimeter which revealed it was putting out around 22 volts... I found that by slowing the tickover down I could regulate the output, got it down to a nice steady speed and around 11 volts so I am happy with that.

I have made a short video of it running which I will upload in due course.

Need a bit of detective work - ooking forward to the video!
