Stuart Lightweight Empty Stuart Lightweight

All being well Mr Postperson should have this on route, it's an early style Stuart Turner lightweight from circa 1924- circa 1930, when it was redesigned. Little 30cc 2 stroke designed for model boats but could also power a 40 watt Dynamo, I've added a picture of a later model with dynamo.

I know it is the lightweight model using aluminium castings but I hope the posties in your area have strong muscles and post bags. Either way it will leave a dent in the doormat when it's delivered!

Seriously it looks like a very interesting engine and hopefully a rewarding project for you. I assume it doesn't have a magneto, so will you be using a trembler coil as shown in the advertisement?

Neil.

Hi Neil, whole thing should weight about 3kg so shouldn't be too big of a dent. Parcelforce should sort it out.

There is a set of point driven from the crankcase, so it will just be set up with a normal ignition coil, this will just be a shelf pet to keep my company.

Steve, I'm not familiar with setting up trembler coils points and timing them but will the points set up on the engine be suitable for coil ignition, is there any adjustment for setting the advance? Purely asking out of curiosity, having never worked on anything like this.

I like the shelf pet concept, I might have to try that idea with some of my smaller engines.

Hi Neil, I'm not 100% in the lightweights. Just read it article again and it looks like it does need a trembler coil, now I've have made a buzz coil before using a 5 pin relay. This worked ok, but did make a tazer...

And here is is running.

I couldn't publish the article on how to make it as there was a fear of some old chap being found dead after touching the wrong bits.... I managed to wire live to earth and it hurt...

Steve, thanks for the feedback. Whichever way you end up doing it, it will be interesting to see how you get on. Hope it arrives safe and sound and you are pleased with your purchase.

Looks a nice wee thing, I like the fact the sparkplug is almost as big as the engine Very Happy

I thought I'd seen something about making a buzz coil from a fluorescent light starter?

That's ok for low tension (ignitor), won't work with high tension (spark plug)

Nice selection of pictures of the engine, I hope you are pleased with your purchase. The picture that intrigued me, was the one of the freewheel, which is marked "The James". Does this indicate the engine was fitted to a motor / auto cycle at some time in its past?

The engine certainly looks at home with the other shelf pets.

Hi Neil, thanks.

Not sure, I thought it was possible for starting the engine; being a freewheel it will only go the one way.
