wico box mag???

Post by mike d on Wed Sep 22 2010, 21:38

HI ALL....

here's a no brainier for you to solve....

my wico mag has just been fitted with new coils, condenser, points and wiring,by a professional mag man,who does it for a living..
i put it on the engine on Saturday morning,it ran for a bit, then stopped, started again, then stopped again, then ran for the rest of the day..
i started it again about 7.30 that night,to show the lights off in the dark,it ran for 40 Min's then stopped.
left it as i thought it was the plug,so next morning(Sunday) i cleaned the plug(wasn't that bad) and off it went,10 Min's later it stopped.
there was no spark at the points, the ht lead gave me a very small poke, and when we put a new plug onto the ht lead you could hardly see the spark,as it was so small.
so my mate had a spare mag for his Lister D,i put the same plug on the end of the ht lead and he spun the cog and the plug lit up like a Christmas tree,i was how it should be with the wico mag..
the mag has been returned to my mate for closer inspection...

i ran the engine at DORSET for 5 days on a mag i borrowed from a mate in Kent,it ran with no problems at all for the whole 5 days,so it got nothing to do with the engine,or it would have played up at dorset..

he phoned me tonight and told me that hes tested it and its working fine, hes going to put it on his BAMFORD at the weekend and see what happens..

what i want to know is why there was no spark at the points and a very tinny spark at the plug when it was on my engine, and now theres a cracking blue spark on the mag..
the engine is a witte b series 2 1/2 hp open crank...
any ideas what the problem can be.....its like someone came along and stole my electricity..we cant seem to work out why it wouldn't spark on the engine, yet its now sparking as it should..its doing my head in,as its all been rebuilt and its like having a new mag...
in theory it should out last my life time and my sons.......

regards....mike.....
