Will hammerite do the job?

I have recently bought a very rusty Villiers mk 12hs (non runner) attached to a Beresford stork pump, have now got it up & running well, so now its time to paint the tinwork etc, from what I can tell it was originally painted blue same as the pump, my question is will hammerite withstand the temperatures?

Hi Tony,

Cant see why not, just be carefull when you fill the fuel tank though. If you spill petrol on the paint work it may react and blister all your hard work.

Thanks Paul, I'll give it a go then, the reason I asked was because the engine seems to have been oversprayed with something similar by Beresford when the pump was fitted. Have taken your remark re petrol onboard.

Ive seen a lot of smaller engines Painted with Hamerite and as much as the colour looks good for the engine the hamerite finish spoils it.

Have you thought about smoothrit?

It may give a better finish, Its just my view though.

The Plasti-kote paint you can get from B&Q is aces! I use there Super Satin on most my projects, withstands petrol etc and is so easy to use. I dumped half a tin of hammerite as it was shite!

would it not pay you to get it shot blasted?????
you could then paint it with enamel paint..as it would a cracking finish..
jonesy and i have had a lot shot blasted,and it makes a difference...
its up to you mate....just a thought..

Shot blasting, all very posh

Nitromors and a wire brush does the job, I used a wirebrush drill wheel for speed works a treat.

Yea if you got the money to spend, I had it done on my francis barnett falcon, also had the wheels power coated yea nice job. I also done my 1st P4 in college in the shot blaster in college

not so sure on the "Far" better finish, with a bit of hard graft and nitromors and a wire brush I can get a engine back to bare metal, with A bit more use of a wire brush I can get the rust and cack off, quick rub with Wet and Dry then a wipe with White spirits, and get it painted from a fresh, red oxide, under coat then paint. Its just as good as any paint job that has been shot blatted before hand, just takes a little more effort then dropping it to the shot blasters

2 Examples to back up my claims

Villiers WX11 done by me in this way, the base is in Satin so wont be as shiny as gloss.



and my Sattley done by the previous owner who taught me how to do the above, he was a coach sprayer by trade.

MONEY....its for peanuts...
the fella jonesy and i use charges £30 to do the whole engine block..
that's inside and out and all the cover plates and head etc....
hardly worth pissing about with...take it to him and collect later on that day....

£30 on a engine that might not be worth much more.., £30 Peanuts!? thats a weeks worth of lunch and dinner for me and the wife.

and thats £30 each time, Tin of stripper is about a tenner and I have done 6 engines with it and still have some left, and about a hours work.

Gives me more pride in the finish when I know I have done all the hard work.

Once painted spray with clear lacquer should help stop the paint lifting on the petrol tank. Myself I'd still go with an enamal paint rather then hammerite.

All the different options seem to have their advantages over Hammerite, think I'll scratch my head & think about it for a day or two, thanks for the imput!

I use this stuff from B&Q, I use there black for alot of there stuff, the Villiers base above is spraied with the Satin Super, its tip top smash, I tried Hamerite for a change and it ran and crazed like made, this stuff is easy and very forgiving, and comes in a nice range of colours, Undercoat is good to.

Last time I used smooth Hammerite was just for the wheels on my van, and it looked sh1t, it looked as if I'd put it on with a catapult, thinned it down still rubbish, never again will I buy Hammerite.

the trolley i have mde the other day is painted with hamerite and the finish is ok , but nothing to boast about .... still tempted to go over it with some black gloss with the brush , i find the cheapest best paint if from a agricultural dealer .... tractol /sparex paint is sh*t hot
