Advice needed on Stuart.

Just wondering if anyone has any first hand knowledge on the Stuart R3, how much is it worth? How heavy is it compared to say a Petter A1 or a Lister D. Any other info kindly received.

I paid £125 for mine but there were a lot of incorrect bits on it and I probably spent another £150 in getting it right. Mine is a R3C and the clutch was incorrect, the pawls for the starting chain had been replaced by bicycle sprockets welded on to the shafts!

The weight is much less than a lister D if yo don't buy the marine one with a gearbox, then it starts to get hard work, I have a ST water pump on mine and it's heavy (not as heavy as the lister D, though.

Sorry, Stu, my only experience is with the R3c and the W2. I would guess that the R5 would be similar in weight to the R3, but it's only a Guess.

The P4 & P5 is a bit heavier than the R2/R3, still fairly light though

Hi Stu,

Reference Stuart Turner engine.

The R2/3 are the 2 smallest easiest to get hold of the Stuart range, the N type is smaller but a hell of a lot rarer (shouldn’t have sold mine!), the R2 is 1hp where as the R3 is 1 1/2hp, they are both different bore sizes, the R3 is a lot easier to get parts for, if your luckily and one comes up the P3 is a nice size but not many about, same with the Pre P3

The P4/5 the early 4 bolt head engines are a little less common then the later, not a great deal though, the P4 is 1 1/2hp at 1000RPM and the early P5 is 3hp at 1500 RPM, they are the same bore and stoke but try to get a complete one!

The later 6 bolt P5’s are quite common and spares are abundant, only one you might get trouble with parts is the P5X, but the bare insides are the same as the marine engine.

From that Stuarts kind of get bigger into the P55’s and the Diesels, the lightest is probably the flattie I have.

R3MC - 100lbs
R3m - 125lbs
4 bolt P4/5 -145lbs
P5M - 195lbs
P5MC - 160lbs

Thanks Abes and thank your friend for the info. What it is there's a guy up here has a few Stuart's he is going to action off so just wonder what they are like weight wise, he has just sold an R3 on ebay for £123 so hopefully some of his other engines (P5)might be a bit cheaper as there not as rare and I like the look of the P5.

I've got a P5XC and I think she's a bit of a lump, depends what you want to do with it but I like to be able to lift my engines into my car myself and I reckon I can just about manage this one on my own but it is a struggle, one of these days I'm going to do myself an injury

Ian that sounds about the same weight as a Petter A1, I can just say lift one of them into my car, sorry I should say I used to be able to lift them
