Hi I have become the new owner of a Coventry climax fire pump I was informed at the time of sale that the engine was an Austin 7 but have also been informed that it is a Coventry climax engine it bears no makers marks or reg num anyone got any ideas as I wish to identify this engine I will upload a pic ASAP when I learn how to use this site as have just joined any Ideas would be most gratefully recieved by the way hello all lol Very Happy

Firstly it really depends on age. If it's the straight 4 engine with over-head camshaft then it is the Coventry Climax engine, pretty much identical to the engine used in the Hillman Imp cars (yes, it was a stationary engine first Very Happy ) I believe the earlier engines were also Coventry Climax power units as well, but I don't know much about them. I know a little about the later ones though as I've always wanted one.

TBH I'm not sure Coventry Climax ever used anyone else's engines, but I couldn't be certain. (BTW, I would still really love one of these in my collection, it would look great next to the Douglas, when it's been restored (would look terrible next to it now though, as it's been sitting in my sister's garden for about 10 years).

Your best bet is to open up a Photobucket account (other on line photo hosting service sites are available). That way you can split all your photos up into separate albums & you can post them up on here very easily just by copying a line of code & pasting this up into the text you are writing, when you post your text the pictures will magically appear. It takes a bit of getting used to, but if you're stuck either I, or someone else, can talk you through it.

Welcome to the forum, I think you'll find we are the most friendly stationary engine forum on the entire internet (honestly we are, I really am not joking). We are also very helpful, even if it's something we can't actually help with, we can still offer advice & guidance on where else to go to get help.

I am still quite jealous of your engine though Wink

Will be looking out for those pictures.

Also, I think you can't post pictures until you've been a member here for over 7 days. The photobucket method I mentioned earlier may be a way round this, as you are not using the forum to host pics, but you still might have to wait the full 7 days as it may be seen as a link, which are also limited to members of over 7 days (it's a rule set by the webmasters to try & keep spammers at bay).

Hi nuts thanks for your input I have recently found numbers on the engine during cleaning which hasn't really helped much they are 4494 if that means owt to anybody reading this lol this engine resembles an Austin A7 flat 4 the cam shaft is in the block to the right hand side of the engine looking from the front the magneto is half the size of the engine and is at the rear side of the engine it has no water pump so is gravity cooled appears to be a very very old engine will supply pics soon as I have picked all the bits up lol it has no starter motor it's crank only . Any info from anybody will be mint even if it's to tell me I'm mad and wastin my time lol thanks

Much earlier engine than I was thinking then, but could well be an ancestor of the Hillman Imp engine.

I might do some digging on this for you, see if I can turn anything up. I'm a sucker for a multi-cylinder engine, especially straight 4s, like my lovely Kohler (there's a thread on that with lots of pics in the restorations section if you're interested).

Let's see what we can turn up on this tinternet thingy. 👍

Hi, just stumbled upon your post about the coventry climax firepump engine.
If this is a sidevalve engine (which I very much believe as you were originaly led to suspect it to be an austin 7 engine) then it is an engine originaly designed for the Swift car company which went bust in 1931 and the Coventry Climax company had manufactured for Swift.
Coventry Climax had lots of these engines surplus and fitted them to pumps and generators.
These pumps were designated as FSM.
After the war they developed an aluminium OHC engine for use in firepumps and this was designated FW (featherweight).This engine evolved into the Hilman Imp engine and the coventry climax V8 racing engine by joining two together.

I had a similar fire pump, it was a Beresford Stork , it was fitted with the Austin 7 or 8 engine depending on year, I could not fine much information about them although I did find a manual, mine had suffered crank bearing failure so I passed it on it was going to cost too much to revive it.
I now am the owner of a Coventry climax feather weight pump, out a green goddess and man it is some machine, I have not had it pumping water yet but some day I will.
