lister d wont fire up :(

hello everyone in the forum , my name is tony and im new to these engines or any engines really

the problem i have is i purchased my first ever engine in july (lister d ) and found it needed a few new bits which have now just been put on

i cleaned out the carb reset plug and points......when i turn it over it spits nhisses put just not catching ....is there anybody out there that could helpwith my problem please
ps i re done the timing as well

One of the first things to try is change the spark plug. I have seen many engines being cranked over that either don't fire or splutter and cough, a change of plug often brings them to life. Try picking up a new D16 plug and see how you get on. Are you holding down the air valve while cranking to give the engine a little choke, it should then fire and run. Needle valve about 3/4 turn open and then start from there. If your mag lead has one of those plastic modern end caps on it, throw it away and get a new brass terminal. Let us know how you get on. cheers dave done all the things you have said ,found it was better without holding down the valve ....got another two of these at my brothers that dont want to play aswell perhaps again get plugs for them cheers dave

hi dave ref....lister d got it running now changed spark like you said and off she ran !! same with the two listers at my brothers new plugs put in and off they ran .............thanks for your help dave

Hi Tony, Glad to hear it. Been there many times, change of plug and away they go. If you have a good mag on a D there isn't hugely much that can go wrong with the carb, so if you have sparks and fuel it should go. Did you invest in new D16s ?

hi dave couldnt get the d16 the guys i went to didnt stock champion ..........had to rest the mag again as that was wrong apparently ...happy new year dave

be careful if you buy champion d16 on ebay. some plugs retail at 3-4 quid but are usually copies that last 5 mins. pay about double upwards and you should be ok.
