Amanco threads Empty Amanco threads

Post by kev Sun Jun 26, 2016 5:28 pm

Hi all just started to put together my hired man and need to make a few studs I had thought I'd got all the bits sorted and in the back of my mind I think I thought they were whitworth threads but no. Can anyone tell me the thread type please.

Quote from this article..

http://www.gasenginemagazine.com/gas-engines/restoring-an-amanco-4-hp-hired-man.aspx?PageId=3#ArticleContent

"The cylinder head and igniter studs were very rusty, and were therefore removed, but two broke off making it necessary to drill them out. Not possessing the correct American dies, I decided to use Whitworth tap and dies that are virtually identical apart from the thread form. "

So maybe UNC- same pitch but 55 deg rather than 60 deg and flat crests rather than rounded.

Yes, originally ANC (American National Coarse), now replaced with UNC  (Unified National Coarse), so UNC is correct.

Don't be tempted to change it to Whitworth as the pitch and TPI is also different in some sizes.

UNC taps/dies/nuts/bolts are widely available.

Many thanks gentlemen I checked the studs that were already fitted and they were whitworth so Paul was crrect to a point but the fit was very poor so I'll take blue cats advice and get some taps and dies to make up my own studs cheers kev

It is the same engine. I had to put it to one side due to too many commitments and not enough playtime , at last I've been able to clear some free time and I hope to get it running to show next season. I've got the cylinder and block up to primer I've done most of the machining on the head (but just found the inlet valve is too short) and the trolley is cut to size and I hope to weld it up in the coming week. The only good thing about winter coming is that I might get a little more time in the shed just so long as she who must be obeyed doest find more for me to do.
