Long term Petter M rebuild
Pembrokeshire. Part way through a rebuild of my late father's Petter M. Dad had this in bit in our garage when I was an apprentice and it's never been back together since, I'm 50 now. It was passed on to my uncle Graham Wilde who did a few bits but sadly passed before it was complete. It's now back in Wales where my son and I are putting the jigsaw back together. Looking for lots of help, particularly in the area of the governor and calibrator. I think we have the gov weights missing and one of the plungers from the oil pump.

Re: Long term Petter M rebuild
Hi Jonacol. I was a clubmate of your Uncles and rallied with him a lot (I was also one of the lads who had the task of helping Nigel to clear his dads shed out following his death and selling various items for Sheila) and I know that several folk had been given that Petter to rebuild at various times for him! Graham insisted that all the parts were with it but after his death none of us could find them all. I did find the magneto in a box in the house, and the brass Petter nameplate turned up a few weeks later in an old tobacco tin under his bench, but I never actually saw the main engine parts as those were with Alan a few miles away at Bradwell. I'm glad you have it back now though, or most of it, and hopefully it will run again one day.
Pete.

Ah I'd hoped someone on here would know Graham. It's closer to running now than its been for a very long time. Graham was my father's cousin but they grew up together and I always knew him as uncle Graham. It's pretty much all there, missing the governor weights which is a concern, would love to know where that name plate has got to, I'll have to ring Nigel. I'm Jonathan Collier and my father was Jack Collier.

Re: Long term Petter M rebuild
Well Jonathan, I gave the nameplate to Alan at Bradwell about a year ago as at that time he had the engine. I will be seeing him this weekend at a local rally so will ask him for you.

Superstar, thanks for your help Pete, and thanks for helping the family after Graham's passing. I hope to bring the engine back up north once it's running and do a rally in Graham's memory.

Hi Jonathan and a very warm welcome to the forum.
Good look with your family heirloom. Nice to see that this is a well known project.

Re: Long term Petter M rebuild
Some good progress to report; flywheels are back on, 2nd hand gov weights fitted (which feeling very difficult to move against the springs??), mag has spark and today cousin Nigel has rung and reports that the engine number plate has turned up!
So just the oil pump to fix now. One of the piston rods is missing in action but I have some 3/8ths ground silver steel rod which I'm planning on making into a new rod. I hope that the piston rods for the pump are meant to be the same length as I haven't got one to copy, if anyone with a Petter M could very that it would be really useful.
Hoping to have a go at starting in the not too distant future, at least 40 years since it ran, probably more.

No, not many folk expect a Petter to start and run nicely! Graham would have been very happy, on to the next one now.

Thanks Pete, and thanks to you and everyone here for the help along the way. We're ruuning on one governor weight at the moment until we figure out what load to run on it. Also need to make a decent trolley, wheels seem a bit thin on the ground. Some other jobs to do like make a proper exhaust pipe as well, calibrator is working fine which is a relief.
