I have a small Petter AA1 single speed diesel engine (1500 rpm).

Is it a bad idea to slow/control the engine speed by using the engine stop lever ?

I would say yes as its already got only one function, to stop.

Fit a weaker governor spring. You need to go digging for it in the engines bottom end.
