Restoring a Lister D should I paint it or not?
Interested in any ones thoughts on painting or leaving as is.
I have the engine in a state that would make it easy to paint but not sure on the way to go.
I'll likely to be selling on the engine when finished in the maybe not too distant future so not sure if it's really worth the bother and cost as I know these engines are not really worth that much. I've already bought and fitted main bearings so it no longer sounds like a cement mixer when cranked .
The trolley shown in the photo is only to may it easy to wheel around in the workshop should anyone be wondering.

If it was mine I would leave it in its working clothes unless I took it totally to pieces to do a full restoration.

If the paint and transfers are original I would say rub an oily rag over it, if not you've lost nothing by painting it.

I'd paint it just to pi55 the purists off.....
But then again I have no time for the dross boxes anyway....

I have to confess to spending far too much on paint (see other threads) but the Petter M, when I get to it, will definitely be 'oily rag' finish.

personally I would give it a wash over with warm soapy water nothing harsh, let it dry, spray with WD40 then wipe it over. You'll be surprised how good it will look.
It's a nice engine
