Gascoigne Vacuum Pump

Does anyone run a Gascoigne Vacuum pump on their display? If so can you tell me what oil you use, the top of the filler says to use Gascoil but I am struggling to find a modern equivalent which could of course be my poor Googling skills.

I use proper vacuum pump oil in mine these days Mick, however when I first started showing milking machinery a local chap used engine oil thinned with a drop of diesel and I did the same for years.

Thank you for the information Paul, I tried Gascoignes a while ago and they had no idea what I was talking about because the pump is so old. I have a Lister D which is tank cooled and was supplied to them in 1951. I'll try your trick Pete with the diesel. There is also Smith and Allen in Darlington which is just up the road from me who do Milking pump oil and also Vacuum pump oil both at under £14.00 for 5 litres.

I'm not surprised Gascoignes had no idea what you were talking about, In my working life several of the companies I worked for destroyed their past history because they either no longer had space, downsized or were taken over and drawn into the new systems of information storage, for instance to store on computers previous data of say 50 years worth would take up some very large computers to do this and the most obvious is the loss of generations of people who retired or left the company, sadly that would be the biggest loss of data.

Fifty years worth of company records is trivial - you could get the complete works of Agatha Christie 1024 times over on a single DVD or about 3000 times on a micro SD card.
The issue is the transcription of written to digital - no technology available and no need. Agree most wholeheartedly that the loss of skills and experience is saddening but time and technology move on.

However this doesn't help Rookesy find his oil. Good luck Rookesy !

Any thin oil will do Mick, hydraulic/power steering etc. I use Morris's vacuum pump oil nowadays https://www.morrislubricantsonline.co.uk/milking-machine-vacuum-pump-oil.html and as the pumps are a 'total loss' system and the oil runs straight through I place a container underneath to collect it and reuse it. And I'm not even a Yorkshireman! If the oil is too thick it will increase the pump pressure so thin stuff is best. I used to work across the road from Gascoignes works but of course that has long gone now, I was told that Stuart Turner assisted in developing the vacuum milking system here and Stuart cast the pumps for Gascoignes to then machine.

Haha, no. Just a mix of Berks and Oxon with a little bit of Italian as well. I do like visiting Yorkshire though, it makes me appreciate Derbyshire even more.
