BTH M1 MAGNETO / CROSSLEY 1030 Empty BTH M1 MAGNETO / CROSSLEY 1030

Post by Waggers Wed Mar 17 2021, 14:09

Afternoon.
Plodding on with my Crossley 1030 overhaul. I have no spark. Tried the basics of cleaning points/plug, remaking plug lead connections etc. Mag now removed from engine and its clear its had a tough life judging by the tired look to many of the screw heads etc.
Is there a basic observers book of “what to look for” for the novice magneto stripper ? Had the points and backplate off, all seems clean/dry. Can’t see a condenser anywhere though ?

Any guidance appreciated

Terry

My first port of call would be to check resistance between HT terminal and earth - open circuit indicates a break. Never had an M1 so cannot offer anything further but for a few quid you can get a manual here.

Thanks. I will try the resistance test first.

The condenser is inside the armature on the BTH M1.

Nope. I am fairly sure it's a rewind job.

BTH M1 MAGNETO / CROSSLEY 1030 Empty Panic over

Post by Waggers Thu Mar 18 2021, 10:02

Checked for open circuit between pick up and earth and tested OK. Messed with position of points on the spindle, turned through 180 degrees, hey presto, i have a spark. ! I have ordered the manual from the National M/C museum which hopefully will tell me how to set it up properly. The mag was still attached to the engine but flopping about as bolts loose when I got it. Timing marks on both sprockets were not lined up so hence my initial concerns

My thanks to the responders on my query, most helpful
