Pump speeds Empty Pump speeds

I have recentlly got a pump which is the type with 2 cog wheels inside that push the water out. There is no maker's name on it at all, the only thing is the number 55 stamped into one of the shaft end covers. The shaft is 25mm in diameter and the casing where the 2 cogs are is 20cm end to end. The pulley is 44.5cm in diameter.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the shaft speed should not exceed 1000 rpm but I cannot recall where. If anyone else has a similar pump what do you run them at please?

Sounds like a gear pump? If so I run mine at around 400rpm depending on engine, anything faster than that I find they make a hell of a noise and are not happy

Thanks for that, I found a couple of videos on Youtube where the same chap is running one, slightly larger than mine, using a Lister D and a Banford. It looks like the pulley on the pump is about a third larger than on the engine which will make the pump speed a shade over 400. I am planning to run it from a Lister A which will be about 200rpm from the pulley, the flywheel would make it too fast.

Yes, don't use the flywheel to drive it, would be way too fast....

Just found out, minimum speed is 100rpm, maximum speed 300rpm, ideal speed 200rpm.
Slower than I thought....
