Hi all,

Can't seem to find the information on the forum - apologies if I've missed it. I'm trying to find the age of my Villiers Mk12HS engine. It has the V type carb on, so possibly an early one. What's the best way to find out?

I picked it up recently and it is in really good condition and has the reduction box fitted. It runs well but has a slight leak - I'll start another thread about that!

Thanks in advance.

Cheers for the reply. Any way of finding out the exact year from the serial number etc?

I believe engines had year stamped on flywheel rim (inner edge)?

I believe all serial number records have been lost.

Check tinware for date stamp. See this thread

Cheers for the replies. To be honest i was hoping not to have to disturb the flywheel. It's running well and I don't want to risk screwing it up!

I can see a number on the main block casting, and obviously there's the serial number on the spec plate. But maybe no way of telling from these?

Villiers engine dating is an approximate science, no exact records are available for most models.

Cheers for the replies. Looks like I might have to take the flywheel off at some point and see if there is a date on it.

If you don't want to remove the flywheel (which will require re-setting timing) try looking for the date stamps first.
Check tank and rear of fan cowling - see previous comment.  It may not be exact but should get you close, unless it's a 'pick-and-mix'
