Villiers Mk12 Empty Villiers Mk12

Post by mattblack Sun Oct 06 2019, 09:13

I've made a start on my £10 ex Monro Tiller Villiers MK12.

Villiers Mk12 Dsc04818
Villiers Mk12 Dsc04816

Looks like the original coil judging by the paint that's blown through the hole in the backplate. Interestingly the HT contact was covered in paint, I'm surprised it had ever made contact. With that cleaned up, the points cleaned and gaped and a replacement HT lead and new plug I now have a spark.

The brass carb elbow should come up nicely.

Funnily enough, the coil on my MK15 was good too.

Looking at pictures of Monro Tillers, it's clear that someone has adapted this with homemade mounts and a pulley.

Villiers Mk12 Dsc04819

I've made a start on cleaning bits up and ground the valves in (the lack of compression was just the inlet valve stuck open)

Block painted, I found Halfords 'Garden Green' rattle can was a perfect match for the original colour (although not cheap!). It's actually no where near as bright as it appears in the photo.

We need a "like" button Very Happy coming along nicely.

You will have to try a photo in daylight to show the colour shade.

Me neither! I have a box of duff Villiers coils, some did spark (and reasonably well) but there was no continuity through them so wouldn't have lasted long in use. Then again many of my other engines have had duff Lucas, BTH and Wico mags as well so not exclusively a Villiers issue! They all have a certain age about them after all. I have a BTH that will need rewinding etc this winter, there may be more yet!! Smile

Pete.

Done a bit more.. I broke a couple of piston rings trying to remove them Embarassed so I used the piston and rings from my 'spares' C12 engine.

I haven't seen one with the oil filler on a cast extension of the sump before.

I think it is because it was fitted to a cultivator, so the drain plug was clear of the machine. With the sump not having the usual 'feet' I need to come up with a way of mounting it on a trolley.

A bit late, but I've just remembered that I have a some MK12 bits in the shed. Any interest in a sump with feet if it's there?

I *think* I am going to make a plate that bolts on to the engine behind the pulley, where it would have been mounted on the cultivator. If it doesn't work out I will bear your kind offer in mind. I have a C12 sump, but that has the oil pick up trough cast in so I don't know if it's suitable? I would like to use the original sump if possible as it is a bit different.

Done a bit more, in fact it's now back together bar the fuel pipe as I need to get a couple of small hose clips.

I find the mini hose clips look better than Jubilee type clips on fuel pipes.

All back together, looking a bit smarter...

Villiers Mk12 Dsc04210

Villiers Mk12 Img_2020
Villiers Mk12 Img_2019
Villiers Mk12 Img_2018

I made a temporary base to run it, it actually started first pull, but died when I bought the revs up and wouldn't restart. I thought it was flooding so I took the carb off and found the problem..

Villiers Mk12 Img_2021

...the piece of foam I had put in the bellmouth as an air filter had been sucked into the carb.  Embarassed. By then it was getting dark and starting to rain so I'll try it again another day. I also discovered that despite what I had been led to believe, silver Hammerite is not heat resistant... Rolling Eyes

The exhaust had traces of silver paint on it so I decided to it silver again. TBH it was a quick job and the Hammerite must has been 20+ years old... I've now stripped it off and redone it, managed to get 2 coats out of the last gasp of an aerosol of VHT silver that was lurking on the shelf.
