Hi. I recently acquired this engine and it appears to be a 2 stroke marine inboard engine.  There is no id plate so I'm hoping someone can help.  One of the grease caps has rotherhams coventry stamped on it so I'm thinking the engine was made in the Uk[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

If you Google "Solo Marine Engine", there are a few videos of one running and yes, they do look very similar.

The Solo marine engine usually has a separate cylinder head ..........

The problem with 2-stroke marine engines is that there are a great many makers, especially in USA, but also in Europe and here in UK. A large number of the designs are very similar to each other as engine companies vied to get into the boat motor market. Solo, for example, did utilise a 4-hole style of flywheel, but as noted a separate cylinder head, which your engine does not have (hence my comment).

I suspect that your engine is American, the illustration above is a Termaat & Monahan marine engine from about 1910, it has quite a lot of features which your engine has, and the holes seem to be in the right places, but even so I cannot make a definite attribution, but I hope it helps.

Blue Cat,
I think you have hit the nail on the head. All the casting bosses look in the same place and of course there's the flywheel with four holes. A nice subject for Identity and Assistance in SEm.....?
