Petter AV1
hello,
i have just acquired a petter AV1, (haven't picked it up yet though), it's not quite complete, needs a fuel tank and an exhaust; (will lister-petter stock these?) but i would like to know more about the engine, there seems to be very little information on the internet about this model, plenty about the PAZ1 etc., is the AV1 rarer? What was the production span?
It is obviously water cooled, so will a thermo-syphon tank work, or does it need to be fitted to a radiator?
Some pictures below:

Hi Mike,
Ive got a petter av1 the same as yours,
I will dig some stuff out and post it here for you tommorow.
You will be pleased to know that it is a serries 2 engine, they were esier to start than the serries 1.

Re: Petter AV1
That's an interesting number, My AV1 is no 614223 dated to nov 1950. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the AV1 range started at 600101 but don't quote me on that. Mine can be a pain to start sometimes are you priming the fuel system and using the oil cup prior to starting?Mattjones wrote:Hello ive got a early av1 I was just wondering if anyone knows the earlyest one in presevation my ones serial number 600006 but having abit of trouble getting it to run.. Re: Petter AV1
I am using the oil primer it was allways started with easystart when it was at my grandads farm and ive given in to using the bad spray but I would mix it in with the oil to get it going I will try and get some pics of the name plate with the serial number all the timings correct and had the injector serviced but it still wont start on its own even if I blow warm air in the air intake and it smokes like hell when it starts my naighbours must reely love me haha

Re: Petter AV1
easy start "knocking juice" bad thing is that of old ,its like cocaine to use ,once its had it long enough it does things that make them a sod to get going with out the stuff, never used on a engine of mine as working on others easy started engines seam to lack the will to go with out after its been used a few times in a starting row, its said to deform parts and leads them eventually to loose there compression due to igniting in the engine many degrees before the normal firing point thous cranking it one way and easy trying to fire it the other "have you tryed heating the air for the intake ,some ive seen using a burning oily rag idea, but a good lister petter diesel will try to run just of the oil from the starting aid plug /plunger ,ive even seen a paz1 started from long storage with just the oil ,with not even a fuel injector pipe fitted at the time
modern stuff is less agressive so they tell me
but im sure somone will get you though this and make me proved wrong
kev
p.s i really should of read this tread better as just noticed the post above mine

Im the same I never use easystart only as a very last resort its got very good compression im thinking wether weve put the wrong oil in wether that could be a reason because it did run only for a min and cut out when we changed the oil we found the govenour pin in the sluge when we cleaned it out I put it back in its hole when I checked the timing

Re: Petter AV1
Ive got some hd 30 oil that should be ok with it and I cleaned the exhaust out if it still wont go it will have to be a head off and check the valves and liner and give the valves a clean and grind .

Re: Petter AV1
hi mj "mj as theres to many matts for me already and we have a jonesey too " "bugger" mj is both my daughters initals
it could be compression from what youve mentioned now
old carboned up oil ,it ran fresh clean oil with less cling ect ,so it maybe glazed up in the bore ,excessive gaps and wear in piston rings or just valves not seating well enough for the compression needed to ignite the fuel, if you turn the engine to compression and keep the pressure on does it rotate slowly ,very slowly or quick ect ect and can you hear leakage from exhurst inlet or sump to give you an idea of were the posable compression loss is escaping

Re: Petter AV1
I think it had new piston rings but not to sure compression seems to be strong but will check it later abit better. When its warmed up it will stay running but I cant seem to keep it at a stedy rpm it allways runs,to fast aswell

Re: Petter AV1
Ive checked the compression and it is leaking through the valves I tryed hot air into the intake while spinning it over and using oil aswell I will have to strip the head off and cleanand grind the valves and ports can you take the head off without stripping it first. Matt

Re: Petter AV1
Regound valves and checked the liner if it was glazed and it looked put it all back together and talked down to correct settings went to start it bled the system again and put a drop of oil in the primer it was smoking on compression but didnt fire is there anything I could of missed to check. Matt

Re: Petter AV1
is there a way to open the fuel up or trottle to it ,it may just be laking fuel delivery to bore
is the injector nozzle misting the fuel well or maybe been knocked or some thing fowling it up carbon ect
ive also bought a diesel that was a bad starter ,after strip down the head was on the wrong way around and the swirl ports were not lined up correct to work more as a re gather and drip port started like a dream after head was other way around again
is this posable with the lister lv1`s ??
