Ruston Hornsby 5m engine

Post by ruthmwa on Sat Sep 25 2010, 18:07

Hello,
I am new to the forum and have a question about my Ruston 5M engine. It is complete except for the fuel pump. Two folks have expressed interest in buying the engine, but I have no clue what a reasonable price should be. I don't want to be foolish, nor do I want to rip anybody off. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone know where to get a fuel pump for it?

Thanks for your help.
Ruth

Hi ruth,

Do you have any pics of the engine?

Would probably give people an idea better if they saw the engine.

Thank you for your reply, Paul.
I do have a photo of the engine, but have been unsuccessful getting it uploaded into this post. If someone could give me instructions, I'd be grateful.

Hi Ruth,

If you follow the instructions below you should be able to post a picture:-

This is how I do it and find it the easiest way.
Under the subject box go along to host an image click on it ..... when the box pops up check the "file" and click "browse " find the image you want to show on your pc... then click on "host it" you then get a box with 3 lines ... copy the bottom line .... then go back to the line of tools under the subject box and click on "image" paste the image url into there .... then click preview at the bottom (next to send) to see your pic.
Hope this helps.

If you have any probs give me a shout and i will see if i can help.

Paul

Ruston 5M Engine.

Post by enginesaremylife on Sun Sep 26 2010, 08:13

Hello,

As others have already said a picture will help as there are a few different types of M engines, some with 1 or 2 flywheels some with open or enclosed governors and some with petrol or hot bulb starting

Is the engine in good un-restored condition? or has it sat outside or been restored? all the above will make a difference to the price.

The fact that the fuel pump is missing will put most people off! however this is not a problem to some more serious collector/enthusiast who have money and access to another engine to copy, that said there are not many 5 M's about!

I do know of one in Suffolk and is owned by a good friend of mine and I am sure that I could borrow it, I also have a Patton maker/foundry to cast the pump, I also have a full machining workshops to machine the pump ready for fitting on to your engine.

Now the bad news, the cost of all the above would be in region of £1,000 for a right and proper job (you could cut corners) also as the 5M is a big engine a good 2.5 tons there are not many collectors that can Handel such a big lump. Also right at this time engine prices are well down!

I hope this information is of some help? I will be able to value the engine for you but I will need to see a good photo first.

Very best regards Steve

Thanks, Paul. Here is the photo. AS long as we have had it, the engine has been kept inside, and by the looks of it, has not been out in the rain, or at least not for long. The flywheels turn freely. Hope this helps.
Also, the folks who are interested in the engine own a machine shop and foundry, so are not afraid of making a fuel pump -- they would just like an original if possible.
Thanks to both of you, Paul and Steve.
