Ruston Hornsby BPR

Hello All

I have started the restoration on my ruston BPR.
The flywheels have come off very easy, gib keys only required a few sharp blows with the cold chisel.



I had to then take the crankshaft and piston out as i cant get it through the shed door unless this is off. Which means it will get put back together outside crankshaft etc.


I then took the magneto off and the magneto assembly. i marked the gears with dots so i no where they go when re building the engine.



Heres some general pictures of the crankshaft and piston and etc. the Piston and the bore have no scoring to them and the big end and main bearings all look good. with no visual wear.













One Problem i have is that the exhaust has welded its self to the head. and has no visual thread.

Tonight i stripped the paint off the flywheels tonight and the fuel tank. just need to finish the wire brushing it tomorrow. Need to strip the paint off the face of the flywheels as i want them shiny and not painted. Ordered the paint from stationary engine parts.

looking good so far Lewis, that exhaust looks like being a problem

i forsee a shed with double doors or 2 big slots in the doorway

i cant see either at the moment. as when i get double doors i will end up filling it with a big blackstone hot bulb engine. so ill stick with a small door as theres a limit on what i can get in. and i only have a 3ft gate on the side of the house. and the big bamford is as big as ill get as i have to take the whole gate assembly apart to get it out.

All of the engine parts have been stripped of paint and rust. waiting for the paint to arrive and can get on with painting it.
The engine block needs to be stripped and cleaned off from grease etc.
All the bearings look good. and the piston and bore have no scoring.

Will post pictures tommorrow. when the blocks sanded etc.

it sounds like a full time job for you...
you should start a engine restoring company..you would get a fair bit of work..

The Engine is now sanded some to bare metal some not quite bare metal.
Have filled the cranked guard as it had been filled with brass i believe. so just wanted a small covering over the top.
I was going to put the first coat of primer on tonight but the weather has turned very damp and wet again. so will put 2 coats on tommorrow after college.

Thanks for that mike i ahve thought about it before. but i think that is something for later in life. when i have had enough of being a carpenter and dont need the money as much. but at the moment im happy working as a chippy.

Progress is coming along well, have filled the crankcase with body filler as it was very pitted and stood out when i painted it grey.




I then painted it with red oxide. as it was a thicker coat and then i have painted it with grey primer.









I dont think the crankcase looks too bad now. hope that by sunday i will get the first coat of green on it.

Lewis..the way your working the engine will be on the rally field by next weekend..

Its first rally shall be august. i need to build a steerable trolley yet but using the original skids, as i would like to keep them as it came from the factory on them. got the wheels and axles sorted just need to get some hardwood or pine so i can stain it to the same colour as skids.

Doing realy well Lewis, should look great once you get the top coat on. Have you any reclamation yards local as you might get some cheap hard wood there!

Hello All
I have put the first coat of ruston green on the engine. I used the stationary engine parts paint and i must reccommend it. it went on lovely and left a nice shiny finish. Got the wood and plained the original skids down back to bare wood. i am going to put a dark stain on, not to some peoples likes but i quite like it and also it hides the darker marks on the original skids.

thats looking mitey smart the new paint ... just love the new paint look .... but wont stay like that for long ... always get the odd knocks and scratches

thats true. shall have to be careful with it. Make sure i dont do to much damage. the paint will be fully hardened by the first rally. August.

Looking good Lewis, you do a great job on the repaint I have to say. Them wheels are going to need a bit of a wire brushing I think I'd look to get them sand blasted, you'll never need to do them again after that.

Hello All

I have got on with the trolley this last couple of days. I have kept the original skids as i think it would be wrong to scrap them as they are part of the engines history.

The trolley was made a bit to wide and then it would not go through our gate so the decision was made to chop it down by and inch either side to give it the room to go through gate with ease. i have decided to varnish it in a dark semi gloss as the original skids where badly marked and the new wood would have stood out if it was a lighter colour.

Looks well and ended up a nice colour, mine never comes out the colour I want great idea to include the skid as it gives it more character.

The Trolley is finished and the handle is on. The handle is from an old camping table. im really happy with the way it turned out. more than i was expecting. 1 more coat to go on the engine and it will be done. shall then leave it for 7 days and then put it on the trolley and rebuild it touching the nuts and bolts up as i go. I like the table leg idea, very clever and I take it that you can un-hook it when showing.

Hello All

I have started reassembly. Its coming along nice now, Really happy with how its looking and coming along. The paint work is very glossy and nice.

Put the valves in tonight along with he carburettor, push rods and gears.
