I have just got a J running. Runs ok but hunts on the governor. Seems to fire 3 or 4 times and then throttle back for 3 or 4 more and then repeat. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I don't know much about that type of Lister but hunting engines can be down to governor spring tension, often if spring tension not enough the engine won't control on the governor. Worth checking govenor springs and if you have a mechanical tachometer you could check the running speed.

My LH used to do that, check the timing you may want to retard it a little.

I have it running at about 375rpm.
What is the correct timing for this engine? I have it set to tdc at present.

From what you are discribing i wouldnt call it hunting as my Lister A does a simular thing when its off load . Put a nice heavy load on it and it fired every beat . its just the guvnor working as it should do . but If you can do a video would be helpful so we can see what you mean . Also if you running it too lean that wont help either .
