Blackstone No Trouble
The time has come the walrus said to talk of many things: of engines, oil and sealing gaskets.
The engine before work commences.
The crankcase door removed, it's quite clean inside
Barrel nuts loosened ready for a lift off.
Cleaning the combined oil and fuel pump reveals a previous repair - it looks as though a fixing bolt was loose and it has worn the hole, a piece of copper tube has been soldered in place to bring the hole back to size.

Re: Blackstone No Trouble
I'm going to have to paint it as if you look at the other side of the head it has been welded and levelled with filler. Plus most of the top half doesn't have paint having being stripped by the previous owner. I'm going to lift the barrel as it has been stood for 30 years and I need to check the rings aren't stuck.

Re: Blackstone No Trouble
Today's progress - Valves refaced and seats recut. Not much to play with as the valves are nearly pocketing.
Coat of primer on the barrel
First flywheel is off
Both flywheels off

Re: Blackstone No Trouble
Not really that much Matt, and for what we are doing it's fine.
I always maintain 2 coats of red oxide, 2 undercoat and 2 top coat, in reality it's 2 of red oxide, then sod it, 2 top coats!

So there is!
As for painting in winter, never had a problem as long as the air is dry, if it's damp then gloss paint goes "milky", primer is a porouse paint anyway so that isn't a problem.

Re: Blackstone No Trouble
I have used the grey in the past, it is just as good. I used the red under the Hornsby Maroon, would have probably used grey if I had had any!

Re: Blackstone No Trouble
I think the engine is about 380kg but the trolley and wheels are heavy so I would think your guess of 1/2 ton isn't far away. I can just lift a flywheel, mind I do have a bad back, hence the chain block to take the flywheel off.
