Maytag 72 twin oil seal question Empty Maytag 72 twin oil seal question

Hi all,  had a bit if bother with my Maytag 72 twin engine, needing to remove the crankshaft to solve it, that is hopefully sorted now well it will be once the needed parts  are ordered and arrive from USA.

Question is about  the 2 crankcase/crankshaft oil retaining seals, on my engine in photos the seals are of the rubber/plastic outer part with a spring in the centre, only ones seller over there shows are just plain ring  felt seals, have messaged him but as yet no answer, can any 72 twin owner tell me if there's has my type of seal or is it the felt type seal.
On one of the seals there seems to be some letters/numbers on the outer edge anyone tell me will this be a sort of size/ID /type of seal in other words will it be identifiable as to order this size, sorry for asks not had this problem before about a seal, will then search for a supplier in this country, suggestions anyone please.

Hope seals can be seen in photos,

They look like 'modern' lip seals, maybe someone has fitted those in the past to replace the felt seals? If they fit and work OK you should be able to source replacements from a bearing/industrial supplier.

Hi Don,
Bearingboys are a good bet for oil seals IMHO.

Reminder to all.
Try using the option to resize when inserting images. Modern cameras and indeed mobiles take Big pictures unless you reduce on the device. Clicking on the smaller inserted pic will take you to full size on the Servimg page.

Maytag 72 twin oil seal question Empty update for above thread

Post by donp Tue Aug 17 2021, 15:52

Thanks for the information as to answers to question, I have trawled around 4 bearing and seal suppliers near me and each one has told me the same, " sorry cannot match that size of seal up " , so have ordered the felt seals from USA, another friend of mine who has a Maytag twin told me he replaced one of the seals, exactly same one that I need to change by making one from an old leather belt I have a square of leather in my toolbox drawers so gave it a go and it seems to be ok but will wait and see what correct seals are like before reassembly.
