Leo display pump

I have a show coming up in a couple of weeks so thought I'd better get a pump finished to drive with an engine.

Bought a Joseph Evans Leo pump a while ago.




As it was working OK it didn't need completely stripping just cleaning ready to paint.




Masked up and first coat of red oxide applied.




After 2 coats of primer followed by 2 coats of machine enamel it was time to pick out the lettering using the time honoured "tongue sticking out of the corner of the mouth" method







Made a couple of gaskets to keep the oil and water where it should be.




All done and back together.




I wondered what to use for a tank and remembered I still had my pistol safes from my shooting days (25+ years ago) never throw anything away that may come in useful!




Cut the top off and cleaned it up ready to seal the unwanted holes.

Laying out the trolley to see where everything goes.




Cut some Iroco to size.




Assembled and a couple of coats of Osmo Polywax later.




As this would be lighter than an engine I thought I would try a different method of mounting the axles, we will have to see how it fares.




I'm happy with how it looks.




All plumbed up, not sure whether to leave the top pipe as is or look for a Brass tap to go on it?




The decals from Titch Sanders look OK




All done and ready to test.




Belted it to my Kohler "donkey engine" to save dragging one of the bigger ones out.

Not sure how much flow the pump should give, it was running at 300 rpm in the clip.

Nice job! The flow rate looks OK, but of course you need to do the official plastic duck test to be sure...

Very nice job, looks splendid. Does the belt rub the woodwork ?

Yes it does a bit with the Kohler as the drive pulley is quite low, the pulleys are higher on the engines I would use to show so should clear the wood, just waiting for a longer belt to turn up.

Belted up to a "proper" engine today



and before @Bluecat says anything, yes the belt is now "kissing" the trolley wheel, I can't win.
