How do read the rpm of an engine/

Probably a stupid question but I don't know the answer, I am new to stationary engines so hopefully will get some advice. My Petter is supposed to run at 750 rpm (according to the plate on it) How do I measure the rpm.

You need a hand-held tachometer which reads directly on a scale, by putting the end of the probe into the cone centre on the end of the crankshaft with the engine running of course. Many rallyfield entrants have such an instrument in their kit; occasionally they come up at autojumble stalls/eBay.

Hand-held tachometers are available on Fleabay.

I have both an analogue and a digital tacho, the analogue one is the easiest to use.

My analogue one is a 'Smiths Venture' 0 - 2000 RPM

My digital one is a cheap Chinese example.
