In search of my next project today I looked at a hopper cooled Villiers WX11.
Not knowing much about these engines the only ones I've seen have had round hoppers with the wrap around fuel tank but the one I was today had a square hopper and a small cylindrical fuel tank mounted alongside.
Stupidly I didn't think to take a picture but can anybody please give me any information about this engine?

Many thanks,   ..... Phil

Could be a tank cooled with a homemade water hopper. Some compressor sets used a WAT engine (WAH - Hopper cooled) with a square tank above the engine. Have a look to see whats stamped on the crankcase near the governor arm.
Give the flywheel a good rock back and forth, if the big end is gone leave well alone unless it's dirt cheap. Big end is an awkward job on these, finding a willing engineer is the first hurdle.

Many thanks for that, I'm not finding much information on these engines on line, a bit of a contrast to the Lister 'A' I've just rebuilt, are you able to point me in the direction of any resources  i.e. manuals, spares etc.
I've now committed to buying the engine but I'm unable to get my hands on it for a couple of weeks due to holidays etc.
Your comments ref the big end is noted but to my mind the price was very reasonable so happy to take the chance on that front.
Once I have it I'll post a photo and no doubt be asking more questions.

Jamie and Luke Coates are the best POC for these. They are well documented in Stationary Engine Magazine.
As with most these old engines the internet isn't the be all and end all for research.
Drop me your email and I'll send you what I have on these.

Here at last are some pictures of my recently aquired W-X11, as you will remember I was enquiring about the unusual square hopper and wondered if it was a modification by a previous owner, on close inspection it doesn't look like a bodge so I'm now wondering if it was original?
I would be very grateful for any information or comments about this engine and some idea of age would also be useful.
As previously hinted at the big end has a bit of a clunk but I will attempt a repair of some sort once I establish whether the rest of the engine is worth a rebuild.

Many thanks.

Maybe not a bodge, but almost certainly a modification - looks like a Ruston PT hopper to me.

Absolutely right, a Ruston PT hopper with an adaptor plate to fit the Villiers head. Well spotted Nick.

Many thanks for your replies, having looked at pictures of the Ruston PT I can see that's exactly what it is, do you have any houghts on the possible age of this engine?
