Types/brands of Paint for engines

Hi all, I am new to these engines and recently acquired a Lister D, running but very rusty and paintless. I am wondering what type and brand of paint to use, any advice and guidance welcome.

Hi, Paragon paint, Mid Brunswick green, a lot of people use it. Have a look on Stationary engine parts!

Oh dear, I hear the sound of a can of worms being opened  Very much down to personal preference - ditto primer.
Agree with RoBo - good results thus far.
I sometimes apply a coat of clear ethanol resistant laquer where there is a risk of petrol spillage.

Keep away from the new eco friendly water based paint, it's c**p!
Plenty on ebay, Amazon or the ones listed above that will do the job, I use Screwfix red oxide primer then a couple of coats of colour on that and it seems to be fine.

If you decide to use Craftmaster, make sure you select the engine enamel rather than the coach enamel, as it is more resilient and harder wearing than the enamel range. I have used both in my time and found them to be good products, it is also used by the railway preservation society that I volunteer at.

Its part of the engines character and history, clean it, de rust it then paint it, don't use filler to hide it.

Not if treated properly with anti rust before you paint.

I've changed to this recently as Paragon has become more expensive.


I normally used Paragon for brush painting but I would not be at all surprised if these came out of the same factory.
A good smooth finish can be achieved even on sheet steel

For primer I use this anti corrosion paint and buy it 6 cans at a time. It dries very fast and can be over painted in an hour in my experience

Of course, the alternative is to clean off the loose rust and go over it with an oily rag...

For me even better, linseed oil it all over is another way and preserve its working life.

Newbie here - is there any concern about how hot the engine runs and whether some components (certainly the exhaust, but maybe also the block and cylinder head?) need special high temperature paint, eg VHT, or are Paragon / Craftsmaster good for high temps anyway? ? Thanks. Chris

Only time you'd need a VHT paint is on exhausts and vaporizers any other paint is normally fine.#

Look at Granville cylinder black for exhausts & air cooled barrels etc.
This engine is hand painted with Paragon enamel

Andy, is the Paragon paint resistant to petrol splashes?
I have used barbeque/stove black aerosol to good effect on exhausts.

The longer it’s allowed to harden the more resistant it becomes but I would always have a cloth ready for spills.

I think you will find that HMG in Manchester manufacture most of the paints listed above. They certainly make Craftmaster. There coach enamel is very good and is available at about £16.00 per ltr from the works. The other good paint available is from Manor coatings at Shiply near Bradford. I think Bromborough paints are agents for them.
