Re: Norman T300 Trouble
Should this Wico fire at TDC or ign on the fly wheel, the flywheel is parallel shaft.

Re: Norman T300 Trouble
This is where the Mk1 and MK2 engines differ.
The Mk1 engine only has a BTH magneto fitted and should have the breaker points opening at IGN mark.
The Mk2 can be fitted with either the BTH or Wico magnetos.
A MK2 with a BTH magneto should have the breaker points opening at IGN mark.
A Mk2 with a Wico magneto should impulse trip at the TDC mark.

Re: Norman T300 Trouble
If you actually mean the mag trips against the spring at the ignition mark, then that may be your problem. Normally the ignition mark indicates when the points open without the trip in use. When timing my Scott engine which has a trip mechanism, I tape the weights up. I then revolve the mag shaft without the trip catching and use the mark to set exactly when the points open. The trip not only imparts a high speed turn of the mag to assist with spark generation it also retards the ignition for starting. If you time the points to open with the trip operating you will double the amount of retardation which is applied.

Sorry, but what do you mean by "Trip" here?
It's not a term I've heard in this context.

Re: Norman T300 Trouble
Wico magneto's have a spring coil which aids starting, when cranking the engine over the spring coil is wound up and released at the set point spinning the magneto faster that the cranking to increase the spark, when the engine starts the "trip" is held by the centrifical force to stop it rewinding the spring.

Sorry for the lack of detail on the trip system but at least it has now been perfectly explained by Maryalice. It is all too easy to forget that not everyone knows what you know! However I'm really happy for you, with your success on achieving a running engine, always a massive moment. Onwards and upwards, from here on.

No apology necessary: it clearly made sense to those who needed to understand it.neil (LE) wrote:Sorry for the lack of detail on the trip system...

I have the dating book for post 1945 engines made by Norman.
Any idea where might a book for the earlier engines might be found?

There was one, and I copied some notes out of it. However, I understand it was "lost" when the chap who had it passed away.
