Amanco 4 mule team newbie restoration
Hi all, I’ve been asked by my grandad to restore his amanco 4 mule team engine. I’m fairly new to the stationary engine world so I hope you will excuse me if I ask some basic, fundamental, and some of them will probably be stupid, questions. As I progress through this project. Also I hope this is the correct place to post this I’m also new the world of forums if not please let me know a more suitable thread
I’ll attach some pictures of what I’m starting with. So you get an idea of what I’m talking about. When I was first asked about doing this engine I was assured that everything was there. I’ve since discovered the head and valves weren’t with the rest of it nor was the mag or cylinder oiler. Some of my first questions would be
can anyone tell me what else I’m missing?, I know that might be difficult on pictures alone
Where could I get some parts info/assembly instructions if such a thing exists?
Where could I get parts if needed?
I’ve spun the flywheels so I know the piston isn’t seized but what’s my best starting point for this refurb what are my first steps?
Thank you all in advance

Hi Charlie. No such thing as a stupid question - we can all learn something new.
You could try for a manual here:

Carburettor and fuel tank also missing.
Your Grandad certainly gave you a tough project with so much missing.
For a cylinder head you are really looking for a scrap engine someone is breaking. All the smaller parts are available at a price from the U.S.- you could try Flywheel Supply and they have a catalogue to download.
I believe someone in Cornwall rebuilds ignitors, maybe someone on here has the details.
Magnetos come up every so often on ebay but make sure you get one with the right number of connecting bolt holes.

At least another thorough search of grandad's sheds for the missing bits is called for. The magneto might be somewhere nice and warm like in his house or the airing cupboard.
Otherwise this is going to be a pretty expensive restoration if you have to buy the missing parts. Magneto typically around £300 for starters. Although it is not essential for running the engine as you could use battery/coil ignition which would be a lot cheaper in the first instance. This is even more viable if you find the ignitor.
However, the cylinder head is absolutely vital for continuing with the restoration as it will never run without it. It should be your first priority. You could ask for a used/scrap one, on here, on facebook, or in stationary engine magazine, but chances of finding one are low (but not zero). In reality, the cylinder head is likely to be only available from the USA, plus courier cost, plus VAT. Once you've located the head, then you will need a carburettor, or "mixer" if you are sourcing from USA. If you have metalworking skills it may be possible to make a copy of the carburettor as they are of simple construction, or modify an existing (non original) carburettor fit the engine..
