New Member, New Questions! Petter M Type.

Heyo,

New member here, my name is Will and I live in Hampshire. I recently came into possession of a Petter M Type Acorn Top.

It was a non runner when it came to me but in good nick so with a bit of work I have it running. Basically it just needed a new atomiser and some fettling.

However I have some questions.  There is a lot of play in the main bearing, I've not taken it apart yet as that seems pointless without a source of spares.  So the first question is does anyone know the original size of the crank and a source of the bearing shells?  Hopefully it's not too far gone and will just need shells rather than a crankshaft grinding but without the measurements it's hard to know.

The second question is should there be a drain for the acorn?! I think there is a plug behind the exhaust however it won't shift.  If it's definitely the drain I plan to carefully drill it out and fit a tap but I want to be certain where it goes first!

In other hobbies I have a Ransomes Crawler and a Massey Harris Pony amongst other projects...  Anyway I'll post a video of the engine running below in case the forum blocks links...

Hi, well you have a really nice engine for your first!! well sought after those, cant help with any of your questions, how much play is in your bearings, are you leaking oil? I have a Bamford EV4 and there is some lift in the crank, its a good rattling fit but not leaking so I never bothered trying to fix it.

So it's the main bearing where the piston con-rod connects to the crank so no oil leaking as such.  It's got some play which definitely shouldn't be there but I haven't measured the amount, I've got as far as realising it needs attention and calling a halt there until I have a source of parts...

I think there is some confusion here over 'main bearing' and 'big end bearing'

Yup, big end bearing is what I mean!

I have a friend who reads the posts on here but doesn't reply directly, I wont ask him directly, who may know the answer, sometimes he sends me an email with advice, I cant say if he will do so but if he does I will post his answer. My thoughts on the subject would that you would likely have to find a friendly machine shop who could make and fit the parts you require.

I'm a New Member, my name is Dave, I have acquired a Petter junior 5HP Serial No 49696, I wondering if some can help me with two problems .the fuel chamber has a drain pin missing I enquired else were with no joy.also oil sump bung is missing .I think a BSP bung

Hmmmm the fuel drain pin will be a problem! You'll need one of those to get it running....

The bung should be easier, do you mean the bung in the fuel tank or the one above this? Normally the higher which goes to the sumo has a tap attached not a plug, the lower one in the fuel tank is a plug.
