Lister Junior A or B type

Hi All

Hope all are well.
I please need to know if my Lister Junior is an A or B type Engine and also what year it was build.

I have a serial no = 240549 Spec A29K.
3 Hp and 650 RPM.

Also need help to post an image.

Its a petrol paraffin lister A, it looks to have the more unusual base where the fuel tank would be too. Nice find, approx. 1937. Dan

I am not sure to paint or not, I am new to the Engine hobby and like it alot.
What do you think will be better.
I have already restored a Lister D and looks good.

Raymond there's always heated arguments about whether to paint or not at the end of the day it's up to you. A lot say an engine looks better how it would of been if it was still working today (working clothes). While others think an engine that's restored and painted looks better. My personal feeling is the latter but ignore me. Then if you do decide to paint then it's "should it be in it's original paint colour" while some say it's your engine you saved it from the scrap man paint it what ever colour you want. I hope that's an un biased view as it's meant to be.
Maybe have a search through the forum at other members engines and see what you think looks best.

I don't want this thread to start another argument so if it looks as if it's going that way the posts will be deleted.

I would give the hopper a spray with wd40 (or similar) that should give you an idea of what the state of the original paintwork is. Then you can decide whether to go down the original condition or fully painted route. It's nice that the transfers have survived and that's always a good start.
At the end of the day it is your engine and only you can decide which you prefer. Dan

I would say that's very well said Stu, you've pretty much said it all there, it's down to personal opinion at the end of the day. I'm not even going to say what I think should happen to it, as it's not mine.

Have a look, there should be plenty of pictures on the internet of these engines in all different states. Decide what you think looks best in your eyes.

I can understand both sides of the debate, but I know what I like. I bet you'll find the decision easy to make once you've looked at a few different ones. I don't think there are any right or wrong answers for this one.

I decided to go down the repaint route with my Lister A, but that was because the hopper was very rusty and there were no traces of the original transfers left. As some of the others have said, it's your engine so you can do what you like with it, however, it might be worth thinking about it for a while first before you decide what to do. If you keep it in its original paint you can always change your mind at some time in the future and repaint it. However, if you paint it now you can't change your mind in the future and get the original paint and transfers back! It might be worth carefully cleaning it and seeing how it looks then? Best of luck with it and well done for saving it from being scrapped.

Jules well thought out about if it's painted now it can't be return to it's now condition again.

So Raymond it's your choice and do what you think best and if anyone says anything about your decision just say it's your engine you saved it from the scrappy so you'll do what you like with it. A bit rude but sometimes it has to be said as you have to be to some people that criticise and don't even own an engine.

Apparently boiled linseed oil is a good way to bring up what's left of the original paintwork. The original paint will most likely be linseed oil based anyway.

I've never done it myself, but I believe you boil the linseed oil, then apply it to the engine (probably with a paint brush or a rag). That should not only bring up the paint that's left, but will also help to protect the metal that's left exposed, as well as protecting the paint & transfers.

I've seen the finished result & it looks quite good. That's probably about the best you will be able to make it look without painting it, & you can always paint it afterwards if you prefer to do so. I expect someone on here who has used this method will be able to give the full run-down on how to do it properly.

Thanks for all the input, it is always good to hear what others have to say.
On this forum I saw a beuty of an A type Engine that was restored, and I am thinking of restoring my one as well.

A very big thanks to Stu and the rest of the members for all the support and info.
This is a fantastic Forum.

I will send some pics when I start to restore this A type.
