Post by mattblack Mon Aug 03 2020, 21:21

This arrived the other day...

Villiers MK20 Dsc05212

Villiers MK20 Dsc05214

Ex cement mixer, it will will keep me out of mischief for a while. I was not happy that the carrier appeared to have dropped it and broken the mounting lugs off the sump on one side. New sump is on it's way.

I reckon that must be a relatively early job judging by fabricated rather than pressed cowl.
Good luck.

Good luck.

The seller reckoned the mixer (which is apparently going to be rebuilt with a new engine) was late '40s - early - '50s, but wasn't sure of the make.

Carriers are renowned for breaking bits off engines (and accepting no responsibiity for it) Sad

Your tin work may be too far gone but check this thread to see where to find data stamp (picture is about half way down first page)

Thanks for that, I'll have a look. The info may come in useful for a couple more projects I picked up today...

Made a start on stripping this, now to find out why it won't turn over for a full revolution...

Post by mattblack Thu Sep 10 2020, 21:21

First thing I did was take the valve chest cover off and see if a valve or cam follower was stuck down, but they were free enough. So after a bit of a struggle with one of the bolts it was off with it's head...

Villiers MK20 Img_2048

That'll be the problem then... so much carbon build up on the piston it wouldn't go over TDC.

Villiers MK20 Img_2049

The bore actually looks good, with a barely perceptible wear ridge.

Villiers MK20 Img_2047

Looks like the project could be a goer. Now I can turn it over I can check for a spark. If the coil is dead I quite fancy having a go at re-winding it and using a 12V car coil.

Hi all, one the same as Mattblacks turned up in my garage yesterday, more or less in same condition to look at, had a quick squint at it and find it will not turn over, has a broken intake manifold, anyone got a spare one to part with?, damaged exhaust but should keep me happy sorting it for a while.
Engine is what you could call FARM FRESH,

Photos will follow when I get the time to take some.Villiers MK20 Vill_m10

Yes Mattblack, reduction box plus multi vee pulley, was going to start it when few garden jobs done but might be putting it for sale as another engine has just been offered to me that have been chasing for a while so if anyone is interested PM  me please but can not give a defo answer till other engine seller is out of quarantine as he has just arrived back from his hols, he will enjoy being locked away for 2 weeks.

Please note, ENGINE WILL NOW NOT BE FOR SALE AS SELLER OF OTHER ENGINE CHANGED HIS MIND AGAIN

Thinking about it and looking at yours I suppose mine would have had a reduction 'box on being off a mixer. I'm thinking maybe I could make a cover from a stainless steel bowl to tidy things up a bit.

(If I can actually get the thing running, of course...)

That looks different to Donp's one? Only 4 holes where it bolts to the engine?

Mattblack, the red. box on mine only has 4 holes where it bolts to engine but where shaft protrudes from only has 6 holes for fixing nuts to studs, could it possibly be a different ratio to what I have making the difference.

I reckon Donp's is a 3 to 1 ratio.

What I am saying is it appears Woodsman's has 4 equally spaced holes and the one on Don's engine uses 4 of the 6 studs on the engine?

Is it possible that your 'box is for a MK10/12/15?

The drawing is from the Villiers MK20 and MK25 Operating Instructions and Spares List Dec 1955 so you could have the option of either ratio.

The MK10 / 12 could have either 3:1 or 6:1 ratios

Guys, I have just checked my MK 20 it is definitely a 3 TO 1 ratio, as per Woodsman`s first drawing photo.

Thanks Paul, but that does not fit a MK20, or should I say the MK 20 that I have, I need one that has the oval 2 hole fixing each end.

OK, understand. That one is for the HS model with Zenith carb'. If you have Villiers carb' you try here:

Sorry for hijacking your thread mattblack - will desist. Embarassed

Done a (little) bit more.

That'll be why the bore is good then...
Villiers MK20 Img_2053

(That's a blurry photo of a +.020" piston, BTW...)

Took off the flywheel and cleaned and set the points, cleaned up the HT contact on the lead and coil as best I could in situ (the bakelite ferule wouldn't come out of the backplate without destroying it). To no one's surprise there is no spark.
Villiers MK20 Img_2052

So I set to with scraper, wire brush ect, ready for strip down.

Re Bakelite ferule: I had a similar problem, some numpty has used Loctite on the threads.
Once you have the backplate off try acetone or superglue solvent from the inside. Soak overnight then some gentle heat - Rinse and repeat.

If there is no evidence of Loctite then substitute Plus Gas for solvent. With patience it should come out eventually.

If you bust it you may get a kit
HERE
but check diameter first.
