Hi folks, Forgive the daft question, the lever on my drain tap has been sheared off (not guilty). I have filed and drilled the remainder and fitted a new piece to make a lever, can you recommend a lubricant for the taper in the tap. Is general purpose oil ok or should i be using some kind of grease. Many thanks, Norman

Grease will work, Vaseline, silicone grease, lard...

I used to do that but as i get older i seem to lack the confidence to just have a go. I also found today that the fuel tank has quite a few holes in it, it looks as though it has a thick layer of body filler on it. I have scrapped it off and will attempt to braze or solder it up. Hey ho the joys of owning old stuff, Norman.

Norman,
Holes usually mean rust so solder and brazing may not work, Brazing may also distort the tank and dont forget to flush the tank of petrol completely, clean the whole bottom and cut a piece of thin sheet and soft solder that over the bottom of the tank, also if you spot where the good metal is ion the tank and drill a small hole in the new metal you could join the patch through the hole.

I will have a go over the next couple of days, if not successful i will cut the bottom out of the tank and fabricate a new piece. This would also give access to a couple of dents in the tank. I may even have a go at making a new tank as i have a couple of engines missing their tanks. I will report back, Norman

I’d be interested in seeing the process you go through to repair the tank - my tank may also be a bit perforated
