Floor mounting

Hi again everyone!

I've now got some bits and pieces together and startee experimenting with putting my Lister LR1 to work as a 12V dc generator and it's time to ask for some advice.

The engine is to stand inside the barn, with the exhaust going out through the wall. In order to keep the noise down and the fumes out of the building, I need a fairly sizeable exhaust system.
At present, the engine and alternator are bolted to a pallet, which is tethered to the wood of the barn to stop it wandering, but the vibration is still quite severe and shakes even the incomplete exhaust system apart quite quickly.

So, what advice can you offer? Should I attempt to remove the vibration altogether (bolting to the concrete floor..?) Or accept it and decouple the exhaust system (flexible hose/rubber bushes etc..?)

Hi again, just bumping the post in case it was missed.

My concern is about whether trying to solidly mount my engine is a good or bad idea; my only experience is with car and motorcycle engines, which are generally allowed some movement through bush mountings.

I personally wouldn't think it was good idea, the vibration has got to go somewhere and if it's that bad I can't see solid mounting lasting long. Thanks Matt, I did suspect as much. I've been looking at those flex hose exhaust things locally.
Reckon I'll probably switch things around, so as to have the shortest path to the outside and get one of those things in at the first available point after that.

You could try mounting it on some anti vibration feet?

For the exhaust I have used flexible stainless steel 'exhaust pipe' (from an eebay supplier and was quite impressed with it - and you can silver solder it.

Maybe you should try to find the reason for the excessive vibration? Something bent, out of line? Big ends worn?

Wow, thanks everyone, this thread has suddenly exploded!
I like the look of those mounts, will have to try finding something local though; getting stuff here from the UK is hell since brexit.

I don't think the vibration is excessive, it's just that with the current arrangement there's a fairly long exhaust run from the engine to the outside wall, so any movement is amplified by that length.
That's why I thought I should check in here to figure out which tactic I should go with: firm resistance or yielding accommodation.

If folks are interested, I could make a short video before changing anything... if so, what would be the best way? Youtube link? Or..?

Folks certainly will be interested, (they're all engine nuts, you know, they may deny it; but it's true, they are.).
But I have know idea what would be the best way, or how to do it.

Are you talking about the same woven thing that was mentioned before, or the stuff that is sold in lengths for making alignment adjustments?

This is the one I've used, made of stainless steel and available in a variety of sizes.

Just my 2p worth, I wonder if the spiral one above is more suitable for when gentle bends are required and the 'woven' type better for allowing for vibration?

Must admit the spiral type didn't bend as 'tight' as I thought it was going to.
