Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlyuiTn7M1c
Ok all Mike D asked me to post this vid for him, this is his sunshine engine that was supposed to be a nice running engine, well it didnt run, however ive got it running for him to a fashion, a lot more work needed, However the main problem is he wasnt told when he was offered the engine that it has been frost damaged and badly repaired and painted over, this did not come to light until we got the engine running and filled with water only to find it was like a garden sprinkler, this engine was supposed to be a runner, how this could have happened i dont know, as there wasnt even any ball bearings in the fuel pump, completely missing,
I will now leave the rest of the story to Mike, Please go easy on him hes not a happy chap at all,
all i can do with help from another local forum member Jonesey is help him get it sorted which we will do no one will get us down, so chin up Mike and crack on,
Ian

Re: Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
My words on this subject are a bit too strong to post on a public forum but you lads know where i getting at .
I would be having serious words with the chap who it came off and advising other to stay wel clear of him if he was selling anything be labeled up as a bodger . Makes you think the chap found the crack bodged it up and slapped some paint and back together for sale . As mike said with the paint is no undercoat just painted on bare metal !
Chin up mate it will be sorted , hopefully it can be sorted for a trip out this season .

Mike,
I hate it when people rip you off, knowing that the engine has a seriouse fault. Its even worse when they take good money off you.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, name and shame them Mike!!

Martin.

Re: Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
well boys im back on again..ive been away for a while, well not away but away from the forum...
as its been mentioned already YES im a tad p---ed off to say the least, but what can you do??????
as far as we can assertain the engine has not been running for sometime,as the fuel pump was inoperative??????
well my good mate IAN and Chris has steeped in to help me..ian has managed to get it going (all be it a bit rough)..
like he said it will get sorted, and as for the head well i couldn't believe it when the water came pi--ing out...
the engine wasn't running at the time, but to think someone sold it like it is beyond me...
i couldn't sell things like this,i would have said something to who ever bought it that its got problems..
well nothing was mentioned, and due to my disability i couldn't go and collect it myself, but was ashored it was ok
as you know two of my boys went and got it for me to help me out..i just wish people could be honest....
im not going to mention who it was as they know who they are,as you mite have seen it advertised on the forum (on the other side apparently)..if i start mentioning names and stuff its only going to start a lot of bad blood....
all i will say is what goes around comes around......they have to sleep at night knowing what they have done....
if they would have offered to give me a refund or even to help get it fixed that would have been something....
that's all im going to say on this matter, and if it starts getting out of hand i will lock the thread...
so please no slagging off of people,i don't want it to get like some forums etc...
on a lighter note ive contacted a man in Australia to see if he or his friend can help,as his friend has loads of these engines,so im hoping to get another head and fuel pump for it as these are useless...
so fingers crossed that i mite have a bit of luck,i know its going to cost me money but it will b e worth it to have it running the way it should....
regards...mike....

Re: Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
I agree with Mike, please no name mentioning or slagging off whats done is done, Mike just wanted people to see the state of the engine and what can happen when purchasing an engine, and like weve siad well get it sorted, its only an engine, there all repairable at the end of the day,one way or another, all i do know is it will be repaired and not bodged up, watch this space,
Ian
ps forgot to mention the loose flywheel as well

Bloody annouying when its good money spent though.
Just goes to show the sort of things people will do. I would never deram of doing that to someone.
Keep your chin up mike, I know you guys are more than capable of getting that engine into a superb engine.

Re: Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
oh yes mate..i mite be down but im a long way from being out.....
it will be fine, its just the annoyance of it all..
theres a big lesson to be learnt here. ???????????
don't take anyone's word for it,view the engine for yourself
its just unfortunate that i couldn't do this and took the mans word on it
well i could have got a few boys together and gone and slapped them, but whats the point...
wouldn't have sorted the engine problem...just landed me in the s--t bucket
i will be a better feller for it in the end,and it takes more of a man to walk away than get stuck in+
and once the engine is sorted i will have a nice little engine at the end of it
its a pity i cant do the things i used to do,and have to rely on other people to do them for me
never mind as i have bought myself a cheer me up present.....
regards...mike...

Stu,
yes but the thing is, its not just one engine it was both the engines we bought from him were U.S
the petter has been completely stripped down as the gudgeon pin was broke (and had been for a while)so it has scored the bore to death,it was chucking oil everywhere..IAN ran it for a few mins and he changed colour (what a mess)
ask IAN to send you the pics of it....grrrrrrrrrrr

There are a lot of genuine people on this forum who have been upset by this including me. Really goes to show you how low people will stoop!! why cant people just be honest? You know who you are, and you should be utterly disgusted with yourselves!!

a simple fix mate , as long you know someone who is a machinist and can make a larger key , i have seen some bodges in my time and the best one is when you see some shim steel used on a gib key ! Thats asking for trouble

Mike as you said takes more of a man to rise above it , its easy just to through a few punches etc but not the best way to solve a problem with the engine . Of coerce you will be Pis*sed off but that just human nature wouldn't be right if you wasn't .
Im here mate if i can help with anything .
What is your cheering up present .... What you emailed me ?

Re: Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
Hi all, well you know the story so far, well i thought id just had some bad luck with my engine but when we discovered mikes problems well you can guess what we thought and said, so here goes pics of mine, i stripped it because of excessive smoke and lots of oil being chucked out, yes i know its a petter and thats what they do but not like this one did, and i guess lucky i knew better and stripped it when i did, bearing in mind this was sold to me as a very nice good running engine with no known problem,
first discovery a broken gudgeon pin not to big a problem you may think,
now the bore
piston
so there you go a good engine ?????
i think not, anyway the block is away now having a sleeve fitted and re bored, a gudgeon pin is being made and a little end,
new rings have been sourced by jonesey, thanks chris your a star,
piston is being checked by the same engineer and will true it up if necessary so he says, hes even going to mill the cut outs into the rings for me for a better fit,
on stripping the engine i also discovered the wrong gib key fitted to flywheel pulley side with a strip of brass wedged under it to take out the play i was not impressed,
so while the engine is in pieces ive got on with a bare metal repaint,
Also whilst all this is going on there is a trolley being built for this engine by another forum member, and very nice its looking too,
i will leave it for him to either tell all or post pics or i will post pics when its done,
but i do have to say all this unexpected work on the engine is costing me, but i will not be beaten by this,
and the same will all be done to mikes engine as well,
i will keep you all updated and more pics as we progress

Re: Badly repaired and slapped together sunshine engine
Well we presume frost damage, and has been welded, but weld has pin holes and leaking, im now wondering if thry have tried to arc or mig it and not cast weld it, but the whole engine is just shoddy workamnship made to look nice with paint,
bolts loose, flywheel loose, pipes that didnt fit correctley, ball bearings missing from fuel pump, crap soldering on fuel pipe joints, ptfe on brass fuel pipe fittings etc etc, but not noticeable to the eye until you started digging,
